Oral Dissolve Film (ODF)

Update: 2024-12-07

Oral dissolve film (ODF) is a new dosage form that disperses rapidly in the mouth without water or swallowing. The main ingredient of an ODF is a polymer that can be both of natural or synthetic origin.
Oral dissolve film (ODF) is an innovative oral dosage form whose presence on the pharmaceutical market is currently growing. ODFs are defined as single or multilayered sheets of suitable materials to be placed in the mouth where they disperse rapidly.
In fact, a number of older people experience swallowing problems. In the presence of neurological disease (dementia, Parkinson’s disease, stroke), the prevalence of this difficulty is higher than in the general population. Eight out of ten patients prefer orodispersible dosage forms over conventional solid oral dosages. Moreover, ODFs can be a suitable dosage form for children who are unable to swallow or have difficulties with swallowing tablets or capsules. Finally, ODFs can also be useful for veterinary use.
